Attracting
New
Constituents
Most
non-profits have
professionally
designed
websites
to
attract
potential
constituents,
some
even
have
online
donations,
but what
drives
these
potential
constituents
to your
websites?
The
newest
method
being
used by
non-profits
are
social
networking
sites
such as
MySpce,
Facebook,
Gather
and
DoSomething
among
others.
By
incorporating
these
methods
into
your
fundraising
strategy
it
allows
cost
effective
ways to
reach
new
supporters.
These
sites
have a
high
level of
traffic
and the
number
of visitors
has
grown
exponentially
in the
past few
years.
These
sites
allow
users to
share
interests,
causes
and
discussions
on a
wide
range of
topics
which
could
have a
beneficial
impact
on your
organization.
By
creating
pages
for your
organization
on these
sites,
it
allows a
network
to be
created
which in
turn not
only
drives
more
potential
constituents
to your
organizations
website,
but also
has the
potential
of
creating
"champions"
for your
cause.
A number
of
non-profits
including
The
Nature
Conservancey
and
Defenders
of
Wildlife
have
used
this
method
and
benefited
not only
from
increased
traffic
to their
websites
but also
gained
individuals
who
donated
time and
effort
to
increase
the
organizations
fundraising
efforts.
Don't
think by
just
creating
these
portals
to your
website
it will
benefit
your
organization,
they are
just
tools to
help
drive
them
there.
You need
to keep
your
organization's
website
just as
current
and
informational
as your
portals.
Don't
let your
website
fall by
the
wayside
as your
gain
more
supporters
through
these
alternative
avenues;
you have
to keep
the
people
coming
back to
it over
and over
and in
doing so
hopefully
gain
more
constituents.

Outsourcing is it Time?
Do you need assistance with
your accounting, budgeting,
payroll or grant reporting?
Is your Executive Director
spending too much time on
these functions and not
enough time on your core
mission?
Have you had some
turn-over in your accounting
department of lack
the expertise in certain
areas?
It is becoming more and more
common for non-profit
organizations to outsource
some or all of these
functions. Many non-profit
organizations have been
outsourcing payroll for many
years. It may be time to
consider outsourcing other
functions as well.
Some of the functions you
may want to consider
outsourcing are:
-
Cash Flow
Management
-
Contract Billing
-
Accounts
Receivable
-
Event Planning
-
Audit
Preparation
-
Grant Reporting
-
Budgeting
-
Expense
Allocations
-
Monthly or
Quarterly Financial
Reviews
-
Strategic
Planning
-
Policies and
Procedures Manuals
-
Hiring Staff
By utilizing the expertise of
experts in these areas, you
should be able to free up your
Executive Director and staff to
enable them to perform the
duties necessary for your
organization to thrive. If done
with proper planning and the
right parties you should also be
able to save money and time.
If you would like additional
information or resources on
this please feel free to

Standardizing
Your Financial Data
Has
your organization had
significant changes due to mergers,
new hires, or additional services
you now provide? Are you having
difficulty comply with revised
reporting requirements? It may be
time to review your current chart of
accounts and evaluate if it is best
set-up to provide standardized
reporting for your organization.
Before changing your chart of
accounts you need to weigh the costs
and the benefits.
Some benefits
could be:
-
Better and
more simplified reporting for
all key personnel and grantors
-
Improved
analytical and budget to actual
information
-
Easier
reconciliation of data
-
Standardized coding and data
entry throughout the
organization
The key to a
successful redesign depends on the
support of senior executives and all
of your accounting staff as well as
management. During the planning
phase you should clearly define a
project objective and assign a team
of core individuals with a team
leader to be responsible for the
success of the project.
Understanding the organization's
financial reporting requirements
is crucial to redesigning your chart
of accounts. A determination then
needs to be made as to the level of
detail needed in your chart of
accounts for all reporting
purposes.You should hold periodic
meetings with the key stakeholders
to obtain feedback and involve them
in the process. This will make sure
all your necessary reporting
capabilities will be met.
